Distribution by Industry

Maryland's economy is dominated by service-producing industries, accounting for two-thirds of the state's employment in 2010.

Goods Producing Industries

  • Highly diversified manufacturing base with 16 of the 20 major manufacturing groups well represented. 
  • Centered in computer and electronic products with over 21,000 workers.  
  • According to TechAmerica, Maryland ranks sixth among states in the manufacture of measuring and controlling instruments with 11,300 jobs; seventh in computer systems design (60,400 jobs); and ninth in engineering services (31,900 jobs).
  • Other important durable goods industries include fabricated metal products, transportation equipment and machinery.
  • For non-durables, major sectors incluide food, chemicals, printing, and plastic and rubber products.

Service Providing

  • Maryland ranks second in professional and technical workers as a percentage of the workforce (26.1%) with over 224,000 workers in professional, scientific and technical service industries. 
  • Technology jobs comprise 82 of every 1,000 private sector jobs - fourth in the nation.
