Distribution by Industry

Maryland's economy is dominated by service-providing industries, accounting for over two-thirds of the state's employment in 2012.

Goods Producing Industries

  • Highly diversified manufacturing base with 16 of the 20 major manufacturing groups well represented. 
  • Centered in computer and electronic products with nearly 20,000 workers.  
  • According to TechAmerica, Maryland ranks fourth among the states in measuring and control instruments manufacturing with 12,200 jobs.
  • Other important durable goods industries include fabricated metal products, transportation equipment and machinery.
  • For non-durables, major sectors incluide food, chemicals, printing, and plastic and rubber products.

Service Providing

  • Maryland ranks second in professional and technical workers as a percentage of the workforce (27.7%) with nearly 230,000 workers in professional, scientific and technical service industries. 
  • According to TechAmerica, Maryland ranks fifth in computer systems design (66,900 jobs); and seventh in engineering services (33,400 jobs).
  • Technology jobs comprise 86 of every 1,000 private sector jobs - fourth in the nation.
