| BALTIMORE, MD Thu, Mar 22, 2007 The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) will be hosting business executives from 10 of Turkey’s top aerospace, defense, homeland security and technology companies that have expressed interest in learning more about potential partnerships with Maryland’s business community. Over the two-day visit, which will take place today, March 22 and Friday, March 23, the Turkish companies will be meeting one on one with 35 Maryland companies to help them in gaining access to the U.S. market, as well as assist Maryland companies in exporting their goods and services to Turkey.
“It is truly a testament to Maryland’s strong economic climate and diverse business community that 15 executives from some of Turkey’s top companies are visiting our state to learn more about the tremendous opportunities for investment that exist here,” said David Edgerley, Secretary of the Department of Business and Economic Development. “Our goal with this visit is to work with the Turkish companies to help them establish a presence here in Maryland.”
The visit by the Turkish delegation was fueled by DBED’s recent mission to Turkey to promote Maryland as an ideal location for foreign direct investment. In January, a contingent of Maryland’s International Operations officials, including International Operations Director Nancy Wallace and European representative Tom Lyons, met with a number of Turkish businesses to introduce them to Maryland and help them identify potential partners in the state.
The companies visiting Maryland include Havelsan, a software and systems company developing global solutions in the defense and information technologies industries; MilSOFT, a system integration and software development company serving both the defense and non-defense industry; Meteksan, the leading systems integrator in Turkey; Ayesas, a software and electronics company that has done significant work for Turkey’s national air defense system; MNG Airlines, a cargo airline that has the largest cargo fleet in Turkey; UZEL, an industrial group that includes 19 corporations, mostly focused in the aerospace and defense industry; Gate Elektronik, which provides services in electronics, maintenance of military/industrial systems, engineering and software development to the defense industry; TUSAS Aerospace Industries, which provides extensive parts manufacturing, aircraft assembly, flight tests and delivery for the aerospace industry; the ICC Group, which provides information technology solutions and consulting services with a focus on the defense industry and Roketsan, the leader of the Turkish rocket and missile research and production programs which serves the Turkish Armed Forces with modern defense products.
